Discover the beauty of Alexandra
Alexandra's Famous Winery Region
Central Otago Wine Prestige
Central Otago is the real wine capital of New Zealand, and Alexandra is located in the heart of it all. This region offers excellent growing conditions for vines. Short hot summers and long sunny hours produce varieties that are complex and bold. Although world famous for our pinot noir, you will also taste great chardonnays and sauvignons.
We're in the middle of it all.
Wineries surround us offering tastings, platters, and incredible views of vineyards. There are a number of small wineries in the area that produce wonderful single vineyard bottles.
Visiting the local wineries is an absolute must do when visiting Alexandra.
Alexandra's Bike Rides
The Rail Trail
This trail was the first riding trail in New Zealand, and it helped launch the New Zealand cycling trail network by offering a breathtaking ride through stunning Central Otago landscape. The trail is exceptionally well maintained and has something to offer for everyone. If you only have a day or two to spare, or a part of a day, there are lots of great day trip options.
Start your trip here
Do this one at your own pace. To truly experience the beauty of Central Otago, we recommend spending at least four or five days cycling the trail. Make us your start point for this great ride.
Alexandra's Walking Tracks
Clock on the Hill Walk
It begins in the township of Alexandra, crosses historic Shaky Bridge (in Kerry Street), and ends by the Manuherekia River. Now a footbridge only, it offers breathtaking views of the river below and the gorge below, originally a vehicle bridge into Alexandra.
At the foot of the hill, the track climbs steeply up a rocky, uneven road and passes a vineyard. Several upgrades have been made to the clock and it remains a reliable feature of the Alexandra landscape.
As a reward for climbing the stairs, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Alexandra and its surroundings. All the mountain ranges in the area can be seen, from here.
Walk or Ride to Clyde
Along this trail, you will follow the river upstream past Earnscleugh Tailings.
Spend some time in the charming historic town of Clyde - it is well worth a visit. After browsing the local shops, grab a coffee or ice cream at a local cafe before heading back to Alexandra. You can either follow the river track back to the town, or you can join the Central Rail Trail to travel back.
